Kyohei Inukei Exhibition

Produced by Japan Society New York  /  2023

We were invited to design Kyhohei Inukei’s first institutional solo exhibition.
A largely unknown, yet prolific Japanese artist, the exhibition highlights the abstract paintings and screenprints from the latter years of his career (1960s-80s).
In gallery one, we framed most of the paintings and displayed them on long flowing shelves.  This gave the paintings an object like and approachable quality, inviting viewers up close to the illusionary shapes.
We juxtaposed gallery three with dark painted walls to display the delicate sumi-e (Japanese ink paintings).  They were shown on varying plinths to create a garden-esc atmosphere.
